List of High-Quality Projects: Accurately Estimated and Low Air Pollution
We are maintaining a list of cookstoves offset projects that meet our quality criteria – projects that we deem to accurately or conservatively quantify their greenhouse gas benefits, and offer stoves that meet World Health Organization (WHO) health standards.
This list is not necessarily comprehensive; other projects that we haven't yet identified could also not over-credit while also meeting WHO health standards.
Projects already using literature-derived values to estimate climate benefits:
Better Cooking Company Limited / Ecosafi project: GS11352: Kenya biomass gasification for clean cooking
- Biomass gasification stoves that meet WHO health criteria
- Kenya
- Uses literature-derived fNRB values from Bailis et al. 2015 to issue credits, which were the latest published values when the calculations were made; going forward this project will use values from MoFuSS, which are the latest published values today.
- Received a positive verification for its first offset credits in March 2024
⇒ Please reach out to Tom Price, tom@ecosafi.com, to purchase carbon credits
Projects committed to using literature-derived values to estimate climate benefits for all credit issuances:
ATEC Programme (PoA): GS11815 Electric Cooking Program by ATEC, with the following project activities:
GS11816: Cambodia
GS11817: Bangladesh
GS12664: Nepal
- Electric induction stoves
- ATEC has committed to using UNFCCC-approved values for fNRB once finalized; the UNFCCC is currently considering approving MoFuSS
⇒ Institutional buyers can contact ATEC at carbon@atecglobal.io to purchase carbon credits or set up a bespoke project
PayGo Energy (now a part of Sun King) Programme (PoA): GS11725 Deployment of LPG Cookstoves in Kenya, with its first project activity:
- LPG stoves
- Committed to issuing future credits using the latest literature-derived values for fNRB (from MoFuSS)
- Sun King is looking to establish a long-term partnership with buyers committed to supporting quality projects
- Sun King expects to issue its first LPG cookstoves carbon credits in 2025. After first issuance, credits will be available for direct purchase by institutions and individuals.
⇒ Please reach out to Mark O’Keefe, mark@sunking.com, to purchase carbon credits
Projects currently over-crediting, but committed to using UNFCCC values once those values are approved:
The UNFCCC commissioned the MoFuSS values and are currently in the process of considering their adoption.
FairClimateFund Programme (PoA): GS11506: Fair Climate Programme for Advanced Biomass Cooking Solutions (PoA), with its first project activity:
GS11507: Advanced Biomass Cooking Solutions by Biomassters in Rwanda
- Biomass gasification stoves that meet WHO health criteria
- Credits issued in the project's first monitoring period use an unrealistically high fNRB value (89%) and so are over-credited. FairClimateFund has committed to using the latest literature-derived values for fNRB going forward.
- This project also generates Fairtrade certified carbon credits. Their project in Rwanda with Biomassters gives cash back to households from the carbon credits they generate as well as 1€ per credit to the community to use for climate adaptation.
⇒ Please reach out to info@fairclimatefund.nl to pre-purchase carbon credits that use the latest literature-aligned fNRB values
African Clean Energy (ACE) Programme (PoA): GS11993 African Clean Energy Carbon Offset Programme distributing ACE One systems, with its first project activity:
- This project deploys the ACE One stove, a biomass gasifier, that comes close to meeting WHO health criteria and is fuel flexible. This means that an individual can use any available fuel (sticks/twigs, animal dung, agri-waste, pellets, briquettes) and still obtain near Tier 4 emission reductions (see Health Benefits). This is important in (inevitable) instances of pellet-supply chain issues and/or when an individual may not be able to purchase fuel.
- Credits issued in the project's first monitoring period use an unrealistically high fNRB value (81%) and so are over-credited. ACE has committed to using the latest literature-derived values for fNRB going forward.

Projects offering supporters the option of generating credits using the latest literature-derived values:
Emerging Cooking Solutions project: GS11508 Clean Cooking Programme for Biomass Gasification, ixo digital-MRV platform, with its first project activity:
GS11508 VPA1: Clean Cooking with Biomass Gasification in Zambia
- Biomass gasification stoves that meet WHO health criteria
- Zambia
- Registered and validated under Gold Standard, but does not issue Gold Standard credits. Instead this project generates its own credits in real time using the ixo digital-MRV platform. Each stove is directly monitored, and supporters can view emissions reductions for “their” stove or group of stoves as they are used.
⇒ Please reach out to info@emerging.se to purchase carbon credits. You can mention that you wish to support their special edition cookstoves using MoFuSS values to estimate climate benefits
If you are interested in procuring credits from any of these projects you could contact the companies directly. They can retire credits on the behalf of buyers.
